Should examinations be replaced with other forms of assessment?

At present many schools, colleges, and universities assess their students by means of end-of-year written examinations. These can be very stressful and many students fare worse in exams than in other forms of assessment.

Do you think examinations prove if a student is efficient or not !!!
there are some people who just mug up the entire matter !

I seriously don't think examinations assess students fair. Many students who get good grades in schools, aren't very successful when it comes to the professional life.
I was an above average student in my school but not on the top. But I did pretty well & better in my professional life than some of those students who had better grades/GPA than mine.

I totally agree with you !!!
Examinations should not be the only criteria !!!
Students should be tested practically.
In an almost practical environment.
They should be given case studies to worn on & other such things.
their abilities to work in a professional environment should be properly tested .

I agree. The only thing that I found useful & practical in school (and I mean all educational institutions including college, uni etc) was case studies & class participation. I learned more discussing the topics than reading the course books. and I found case studies really useful in my learning curve.
I'd rather have my school give me a big project to work on rather than giving me a couple of hrs to sit in an exam.

I know what you mean. I studied in Pakistan mostly so I've experienced the worst even though my school had good ratings. It was much better here because grades were based on projects & assignments as well as exams. But I think even here, things need to be fixed.
