My umpiring duty in a state cricket match was that of one hot day, less humid but extremely hot. Gatorade and water cooler was kept in both team's 'dugout' (benches if you will). Before the match, I went to the men's room. Coming out, I noticed the captain of the team (team which I played for but stood as an umpire), saw the captain of my team coming out of women's changing room. Puzzled, I asked him out of curiosity and the reply was "
Mein guard pehannay gaya tha". I inquired "In women's?", and he came back with "
Koi tha nahin to isi liyey."
The match got underway. We had won the toss and put the opposition into bat on a hot day (as the expectation was that it will cool down for batting by next innings). I was out with my glasses (sunglasses/shades). As match progressed, wides were a norm as no professional cricket was taking place. At one point, the ball pitched on off-stump and hit middle and leg on the pads. Bowler, keeper and slip fielders appealed, given. First one down for the opposition. The talk started in the benches, but it was indistinct so we could not hear them clearly. The next over, ball pitched on middle, was going straight, no bat contact. Batsman shook it off as nothing had really happened. Appealed and given. Batsman left in anger. After reaching the dugout (benches where the opposition team was sitting and watching), loud shouts were heard as the new batsman was coming in: "
Umpire ko bolo chashmay theek karay", "
Umpire ko nazar nahin aa raha isey chashmay do", and similar good remarks.
Our turn came to bat. One of the established batsman had walked out after 4-5 down. First ball, pitched on middle about quarter of a way down, going towards leg and perhaps missing leg stump. Very marginal decision. The batsman brushed it off. I raised my finger. Similar reaction after the batsman went back and talked to me afterwards. The umpire's decision is final and that was that.
